Clover Bell Babies are here! Spring and Summer 2011 have been wonderful with 11 calves and counting on the ground. It's been a "colorful" year - we have had 4 red and 6dun so far and are looking forward to seeing a black calf or two added to the mix by the end of the calving season (we finally got 1!!). We will be selling some new calves with their mamas as cow/calf pairs. Otherwise, calves will be weaned at 6 months before sale. Clover Bell Velvet Rose
September 24, 2008
"Well, it's a red. We know that much so far." the familiar voice on the line was my friend Tabitha Booher who purchased 6 bred cows from us in spring. I've been getting updates on Clover Bell Thistle who was expecting her first calf any day. Tabitha and Greg Booher live east of Nashville in Livingston, Tennessee where they manage the airport. They got the Dexter "bug" big time and have TWO herds now. One in Tennessee and one in their home state of Arkansas. (Who was it said Dexters are like potato chips? 3 points if you can email me the punch line!) Thistle was the first Clover Bell heifer to have a Clover Bell calf and she carries red as she is out of the fantastic bull Windgate Striker B (son of Cornahir Outlaw) that we leased way back in 2005. Bred to Rafferty we knew that Thistle had a 50% chance of having Clover Bell's first red. My heart jumped trying to guess if Tabitha was just teasing me. (I had threatened to commit hari kari if she got the first red.) Yep, she was telling the truth alright. Thistle was right IN the process during that phone call of giving birth (easily) and was just licking the newborn calf off. I could hear the familiar "mommy moo" in the background. I screamed so loud in excitement I broke Tabitha's eardrum! She called later to confirm that it was, indeed, a heifer and weighed 41.5 pounds and measured 24.5 inches at the hip.
Clover Bell Velvet is absolutely gorgeous and just glows in the sunlight. We're hoping she'll have the black nose that her grandsire did but no matter what she's a beauty. And the first red. And she's not mine.
Sigh.
Post Script - Summer 2010
Clover Bell Velvet Rose is back with us after we made a trade with our good friends for her. They like black and polled and we had a beautiful, bred cow that was just right to make a trade and get Rose! We're so excited that she is now bred and we're expecting her first calf in October. And they lived happily ever after.....
